Paper

OVERVIEW
Paper is created by mechanically or chemically processing cellulose fibres derived from wood, plant material or cloth in water. The resulting material, called pulp, is then drained, pressed and dried to create paper. Paper making has been traced back to the 2nd century BCE in China. The use of paper made its way to Europe and by the 15th century England was mass producing paper and distributing it around the world. In 1690, the first paper mill was operating in the United States of America. Today, China and the USA lead the world in paper production.

The word paper is derived from the Latin word papyrus, a paper-like material used in ancient Egypt. The history of paper is long and has developed into a global industry producing paper which is measured by weight and classified into 7 categories:

• Printing papers
• Wrapping papers
• Writing paper
• Blotting papers
• Drawing papers 
• Handmade papers
• Specialty papers

The European paper-sizing system uses grams per square metre, g/m2 or most often written as gsm. Printer paper usually weighs between 60 gsm and 120 gsm. Paper which weighs more than 160 gsm is considered cardstock. 

What makes paper sustainable?

Paper which is produced using renewable and sustainable wood, produced sustainably and recycled after its use can be viewed as a sustainable material. Today, 40% of paper pulp is created from wood, which means the remaining percentage is made up of recycled paper materials. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency USA) estimates that recycling one ton of paper saves 17 trees and more than 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space. With continued protection of healthy forests which directly impact climate change, and regulation of wood sources, paper can continue to be a valuable resource for the future.

What types of paper is used at Wunderlabel?

Our hang tags and business cards are printed on 300 gsm paper which means they feel substantial and sturdy in your hand.They are individually cut and include a punched hole for hanging. 

Hang tags and business cards are available in standard 300 gsm paper, 100% recycled 300 gsm paper and 300 gsm kraft paper.
Our paper stickers are printed on coated paper which is FSC certified. The basic weight of white sticker paper 80 ± 3 g/m2, and 80  ± 5 g/m2 for kraft sticker paper.

Our hang tag and business card paper* is sourced from a supplier which is certified for the following:

• Forest Stewardship Council®

This certification means that the paper used to create our hang tags is made from responsible sources and has been verified to meet FSC’s strict environmental and social standards.

• Heavy Metal Absence 94/62/CE

Paper is produced in conformity with the CE94/62 "concentration of heavy metals in packaging". It is the directive defining the maximum concentration of heavy metals such as cadmium, chrome, mercury and lead.

• Elemental Chlorine Free Guaranteed (ECF)

Certification ensures total absence of derivative organic chlorine.

• Acid Free / Long-Life ISO 9706

Certifies long life of acid free paper.

• Selected Secondary Fibers

Sourcing reclaimed material for use in FSC Product Groups or FSC Certified Projects.

*Sticker paper is only FSC certified.

Lamination

Our matte finish hang tags and business cards are laminated with 18 micron thick BOPP lamination film. The lamination is applied using a pressurised roller which uses heat to transfer the BOPP lamination film. Colours may vary when printed on kraft paper.

Without Matte Lamination:

Hang tags and business cards without the matte lamination option are printed on plain 300 gsm paper which has a glossy finish (no lamination film is applied). Kraft paper business cards without the matte lamination remain matte while the print appears glossy. Colours may vary when printed on kraft paper.
